Do the magnets make contact with one another when they are set in motion?

In normal operation there is actually NO physical contact as the individual magnets bounce off the opposing magnetic field of the approaching magnet. However, an occasional collision between the magnets can occur if too much energy is applied when setting the magnets in motion. An occasional collision should not damage the magnets due to their protective covers, though one should take note, and reduce the amount of energy applied when setting the magnets in motion.

Why is Magnetic Mayhem more expensive than Newton's cradle?

I understand your concern, especially in today's market. Please keep in mind that Newton's cradle uses steel balls and fishing line. Magnetic Mayhem uses rare earth (neodymium) magnets, which are more costly than steel balls. It also requires stainless steel wire (not fishing line) to ensure that the magnets maintain their alignment. On top of that, it uses eight precision bearings that allow it to rotate in a full circle, whereas Newton's cradle can only swing, or isolate back-and-forth.
